Start with bismillah.

Ask: "What is a tax, and why do countries collect them?"

Play the short At-Tawbah clip of ayat 21–30 from Learn Islamic Topics.

Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "What tax is mentioned?"

Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "Why were non-Muslims protected under Muslim rule?" Younger children can draw theirs.

Find it in the mushaf: Surah At-Tawbah is surah 9. Find ayah 29. This ayah came during conflict with the Byzantine Roman empire. In a Muslim state, Jews and Christians who did not fight paid the jizyah tax instead of serving in the army, and in return were protected, kept their religion and lived in safety. Muslims paid zakah. Islam tells us to be fair and kind to people of all faiths.

Fact: Find Al-Mumtahanah 60:8: Allah does not forbid kindness and fairness to those who do not fight you.

Ages 5–8: Kind neighbours. Do something kind for a neighbour.

Ages 9–12: Protected. Write how non-Muslims were protected in Muslim lands.

Finish with: "Al-Mumtahanah 60:8 allows kindness and ___ to peaceful people."

Talk together:

• What is the jizyah?
• Which name of Allah does this remind you of?
• Why were non-Muslims protected?
• How can you be kind to people of other faiths?

Make a small plan: "This week, I will be kind to a neighbour of a different faith."
