فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ
Faʻataw' ʻan' 'am'ri rabbihim' fa'akhadhat'humu ṣṣāʻiqatu wahum' yanẓurūna
But they insolently defied the Command of their Lord: So the stunning noise (of an earthquake) seized them, even while they were looking on.

But they defied their Lord's command, and a thunderbolt seized them as they watched.
Start with bismillah.
Ask: "Have you ever jumped at a sudden clap of thunder?"

Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "How powerful is a single bolt of lightning?" Younger children can draw theirs.
Find it in the mushaf: Surah Adh-Dhariyat is surah 51. Find ayah 44. The key word as-sa'iqah means a thunderbolt or a mighty blast. Thamud refused Allah's command and harmed the she-camel they were told to protect. The punishment came suddenly. Lightning reminds us of Allah's power. It is a sign to ponder.
Fact: How hot is a bolt of lightning compared with the surface of the sun?
Ages 5–8: Count the storm. Next time there is a storm, count the seconds between the flash and the thunder.
Ages 9–12: Safety poster. Make a poster of five lightning safety rules.
Finish with: "I found that lightning is about ___ hot."
Talk together:
Make a small plan: "This week, I will learn one lightning safety rule and teach it to my family."
