يَسْـَٔلُكَ أَهْلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ أَن تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ كِتَٰبًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۚ فَقَدْ سَأَلُوا۟ مُوسَىٰٓ أَكْبَرَ مِن ذَٰلِكَ فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَرِنَا ٱللَّهَ جَهْرَةًۭ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّٰعِقَةُ بِظُلْمِهِمْ ۚ ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلْعِجْلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُ فَعَفَوْنَا عَن ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ سُلْطَٰنًۭا مُّبِينًۭا
How to read it
Yas''aluka 'ah'lu l-kitābi 'an tunazzila ʻalay'him' kitāban mmina ssamā'i . faqad' sa'alū mūssā 'ak'bara min dhālika faqālū 'arinā -llaha jah'ratan fa'akhadhat'humu ṣṣāʻiqatu biẓul'mihim' . thumma (i)ttakhadhū l-ʻij'la min[m] baʻ'di mā jā'at'humu l-bayyinātu faʻafaw'nā ʻan dhālika . wa'ātay'nā mūssā sulṭānan mmubīnan
The people of the Book ask thee to cause a book to descend to them from heaven: Indeed they asked Moses for an even greater (miracle), for they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were dazed for their presumption, with thunder and lightning. Yet they worshipped the calf even after clear signs had come to them; even so we forgave them; and gave Moses manifest proofs of authority.
