He also asked whether the idols could do them any good or any harm.

Find it in the mushaf: Surah Ash-Shu'ara is surah 26. Find ayah 73. The key words yanfa'unakum aw yadurrun mean benefit you or harm. Idols could do neither. Only Allah brings real good and protects from harm. Trust belongs to the One who can act.
