Start with bismillah.

Ask: "When you're upset, what's the kindest thing someone has done to calm you?"

Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "What two things do these believers encourage each other to do?"

Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "How do animals comfort each other?" Younger children can draw theirs.

Find it in the mushaf: Surah Al-Balad is surah 90. Find ayah 17. Look for the key words as-sabr (patience) and al-marhamah (mercy, compassion).

Fact: How do elephants comfort a friend who is upset?

Ages 5–8: Kind words jar. Write or draw kind things to say when someone is sad. Put them in a jar to use.

Ages 9–12: Patience test. Plant a fast seed and decide not to dig it up to check. Note each day how hard it is to wait.

Finish with: "I found that elephants comfort each other by ___."

Talk together:

• Why do believers need to remind each other to be patient?
• Which name of Allah does this remind you of?
• How can you show mercy to someone who is struggling?
• When was someone patient with you?
• How can your family remind each other to be kind?

Make a small plan: "This week, I will remind ___ to be patient, and show mercy to ___."

• Be patient with a younger brother, sister or cousin.
• Show someone your patience-test plant.
• Next time: the next ayah (90:18) tells us who these people are. Explore it together!
