Surah 'Abasa opens by describing a frown and a turning away.
Start with bismillah.
A note for parents: ayat 1 to 10 tell a true story about the Prophet ﷺ. Speak of him with love and respect. Allah taught even His beloved Prophet ﷺ gently.
Make a happy face, a sad face and a cross face. Ask: "Can people tell how you feel without any words?"
Watch the Smile and Learn video about emotions.
Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "What do faces 'say' in this ayah?"
Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "Why does Allah tell us this story?" Younger children can draw theirs.
Find it in the mushaf: Surah 'Abasa is surah 80, and it has forty-two ayat. Find ayah 1. The surah is named after the key word 'abasa: he frowned. The Prophet ﷺ was busy speaking with important leaders, hoping they would believe, when a blind man came to learn.
Fact: How many muscles do we use to smile?
Ages 5–8: Face cards. Draw faces showing five feelings. Can your family guess each one?
Ages 9–12: Animal faces. Find out how chimpanzees and dogs show their feelings with their faces.
Finish with: "I found that we use about ___ muscles to smile."

Talk together:
Make a small plan: "This week, I will greet everyone I meet with a smile."
Action: Greet everyone you meet with a smile.
