Opening the ayah…
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَٰعِبِينَ
Wa mā khalaq'nā ssamāwāti wal-'ar'ḍa wamā bay'nahumā lāʻibīna
We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, merely in (idle) sport:
Translation: Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Guided by the 4-I journey: Inspire, Investigate, Integrate, Impart. Use it as a starting point and make it your own.
Opening the guide…
No reflections for this ayah yet. Be the first, by reflecting with the 4-I journey below!
4-I guide
We did not create the skies, the earth and everything between them for play.
Start with bismillah.
Ask: "Why did Allah create us?"
Watch the Let's Learn Deen video Why Did Allah Create Us?, delivered by children.
Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "What was creation NOT made for?"
Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "What is my purpose?" Younger children can draw theirs.
Find it in the mushaf: Surah Ad-Dukhan is surah 44. Find ayah 38. The key word la'ibin means playing for fun. A game is played and then forgotten. Allah did not make the universe like that. Everything has a purpose, and so do we: to know Allah, worship Him and do good.
Fact: Which ayah in Surah Adh-Dhariyat tells us why humans were created?
Ages 5–8: Purpose hunt. Find five things at home and say what each one is for.
Ages 9–12: My purpose. Write one sentence about your purpose and three ways to live it.
Finish with: "I found that the ayah is in Surah Adh-Dhariyat, number ___."
Talk together:
Make a small plan: "This week, I will start each day by remembering my purpose."
Action: Start each day by remembering your purpose.
