وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَٰٓأَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَٱبْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌۭ
Wa tawallā ʻan'hum' waqāla yā'assafā ʻalā yūssufa wa-b'yaḍḍat' ʻay'nāhu mina l-ḥuz'ni fahuwa kaẓīmun
And he turned away from them, and said: "How great is my grief for Joseph!" And his eyes became white with sorrow, and he fell into silent melancholy.

Ya'qub turned away and said how great his sorrow for Yusuf was, and his eyes turned white with grief that he held inside.
Start with bismillah.
Ask: "Is it okay to feel sad?"
Listen together as Ahmad Al-Ubayd recites ayat 80–87 of Yusuf, a short clip shared by Sunnah Arise.
Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "Whom was Ya'qub sad about?"
Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "How did Ya'qub handle such deep sadness?" Younger children can draw theirs.
Find it in the mushaf: Surah Yusuf is surah 12. Find ayah 84. Ya'qub was a prophet, and he still felt deep sadness. Feeling sad is human. He kept it inside and didn't complain to people. Sadness is not weakness.
Fact: Al-Hadid 57:23 says don't despair over what you lose. Read it with a grown-up.
Ages 5–8: Feelings are okay. Talk about what you do when you feel sad.
Ages 9–12: Healthy sadness. Write ways to handle sadness well.
Finish with: "Al-Hadid 57:23 says ___."
Talk together:
Make a small plan: "This week, I will tell Allah how I feel in du'a."
Action: Tell Allah how you feel in du'a.
