وَكَتَبْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ فِيهَآ أَنَّ ٱلنَّفْسَ بِٱلنَّفْسِ وَٱلْعَيْنَ بِٱلْعَيْنِ وَٱلْأَنفَ بِٱلْأَنفِ وَٱلْأُذُنَ بِٱلْأُذُنِ وَٱلسِّنَّ بِٱلسِّنِّ وَٱلْجُرُوحَ قِصَاصٌۭ ۚ فَمَن تَصَدَّقَ بِهِۦ فَهُوَ كَفَّارَةٌۭ لَّهُۥ ۚ وَمَن لَّمْ يَحْكُم بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
How to read it
Wa katab'nā ʻalay'him' fīhā 'anna nnaf'sa bi nnaf'si wal-ʻay'na bil-ʻay'ni wal-'anfa bil-'anfi wal-'udhuna bil-'udhuni wa ssinna bi ssinni wal-jurūḥa qiṣāṣun . faman taṣaddaqa bihī fahuwa kaffāratun llahu . waman llam' yaḥ'kum bimā 'anzala -llahu fa'ūlā'ika humu ẓẓālimūna
We ordained therein for them: "Life for life, eye for eye, nose or nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if any one remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (No better than) wrong-doers.
