Find it in the mushaf: Surah Ya-Sin is surah 36. Find ayah 39. The key word al-'urjun al-qadim means an old date stalk. When a date bunch is cut, its stalk dries, curves and turns yellow, just like a thin crescent. The moon passes through its stages each month, which helped people count months and know when Ramadan begins.
