وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ دُونَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
Wa lanudhīqannahum mmina l-ʻadhābi l-'ad'nā dūna l-ʻadhābi l-'ak'bari laʻallahum' yar'jiʻūna
And indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty, in order that they may (repent and) return.

Allah lets people face smaller difficulties in this life so that they might turn back to Him.
Start with bismillah.
Ask: "Can a small problem ever wake us up to something important?"
Watch the iLovUAllah video Hardships? Allah Promised This.
Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "Why do the smaller tests come?"
Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "How can a hard time bring me closer to Allah?" Younger children can draw theirs.
Find it in the mushaf: Surah As-Sajdah is surah 32. Find ayah 21. The key word yarji'un means they return. Sometimes difficulties in this life are like an alarm clock: they wake us up and remind us to turn back to Allah. The door of return is open. Allah does this out of care, so that people can change before it is too late.
Fact: Which prophet called to Allah from inside a whale and was rescued when he turned to Him?
Ages 5–8: Alarm clock. Set an alarm and talk about how reminders wake us up.
Ages 9–12: Wake-up moments. Write about a difficulty that helped you remember Allah.
Finish with: "I found that it was prophet ___."
Talk together:
Make a small plan: "This week, I will say a dua straight away when something goes wrong."
Action: Say a dua straight away when something goes wrong.
