Start with bismillah.

Ask: "Can you judge a book just by its cover?"

Listen to the M Asif recitation of Surah Ar-Rum by Mishary Al-Afasy. Play the first few minutes.

Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "What do people forget?"

Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "How can I see beyond the outside of things?" Younger children can draw theirs.

Find it in the mushaf: Surah Ar-Rum is surah 30. Find ayah 7. The key word zahiran means the outside or surface. People can be very clever about business, technology and games, yet forget the bigger purpose of life. Knowing how a phone works is useful; knowing why we are alive matters even more.

Fact: How much of an iceberg is hidden under the water?

Ages 5–8: Iceberg in a bowl. Float an ice cube in water and see how much hides underneath.

Ages 9–12: Surface and depth. List three things that look one way on the outside but are deeper inside.

Finish with: "I found that about ___ of an iceberg is hidden."

Talk together:

• What is the surface of life, and what is deeper?
• Which name of Allah does this remind you of?
• Why do people forget the Hereafter?
• How can you keep the bigger picture in mind?
• What would you like to ask about this ayah?

Make a small plan: "This week, I will ask myself why I am doing things, not only how."

• Ask why, not only how.
• Try the iceberg bowl.
• Share surface and depth.
• Next time: the next ayah (30:8) asks us to think about ourselves. Explore it together!
