فَإِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَلَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ ٱلدُّعَآءَ إِذَا وَلَّوْا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ
Fa'innaka lā tus'miʻu l-maw'tā walā tus'miʻu ṣṣumma dduʻā'a 'idhā wallaw' mud'birīna
So verily thou canst not make the dead to hear, nor canst thou make the deaf to hear the call, when they show their backs and turn away.

The Prophet cannot make the spiritually dead or deaf hear the call when they turn their backs.
Start with bismillah.
Ask: "Can you make someone listen if they cover their ears?"
Listen to the Ar-Rahmaan Quran Channel recitation of Surah Ar-Rum by Sheikh Al-Husary. Play the first few minutes.
Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "Who cannot be made to hear?"
Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "How can I keep my heart open?" Younger children can draw theirs.
Find it in the mushaf: Surah Ar-Rum is surah 30. Find ayah 52. The words dead and deaf here describe hearts, not bodies. Some people close their hearts to the truth and walk away. The Prophet was told not to feel responsible for their choice. Our job is to keep our own hearts open and share kindly.
Fact: About how fast does sound travel through air?
Ages 5–8: Open ears. Play a game where one person whispers and the other must listen carefully with full attention.
Ages 9–12: Open heart signs. Write five signs of an open, listening heart.
Finish with: "I found that sound travels about ___ metres per second."
Talk together:
Make a small plan: "This week, I will listen to a reminder with an open heart."
Action: Listen to a reminder with an open heart.
