قَالُوا۟ جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ مَن وُجِدَ فِى رَحْلِهِۦ فَهُوَ جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
Qālū jazā'uhu man wujida fī raḥ'lihī fahuwa jazā'uhu . kadhālika naj'zī ẓẓālimīna
They said: "The penalty should be that he in whose saddle-bag it is found, should be held (as bondman) to atone for the (crime). Thus it is we punish the wrong-doers!"

The brothers said that under their own law, whoever had the cup in his bag would be kept in return, which is how they dealt with wrongdoers.
Start with bismillah.
Ask: "What happens when people choose their own rule?"
Muhammad Al-Luhaidan recites Yusuf on Shirvani. A few minutes is plenty.
Now listen to the ayah together in the app, with the translation. Ask: "What penalty did the brothers suggest?"
Each child keeps one wonder question, for example: "How did their rule help Yusuf's plan?" Younger children can draw theirs.
Find it in the mushaf: Surah Yusuf is surah 12. Find ayah 75. In Ya'qub's law, a thief would stay as a servant to the owner. The brothers stated this rule themselves, so Yusuf could keep Binyamin fairly.
Fact: In 12:76 Allah explains why Yusuf could not use the king's law. Read it.
Ages 5–8: Rule keepers. Talk about why we follow rules we agreed to.
Ages 9–12: Fair rules. Write how the brothers' rule helped Yusuf act fairly.
Finish with: "12:76 says Yusuf could not take his brother under ___."
Talk together:
Make a small plan: "This week, I will follow a rule I agreed to without being reminded."
Action: Follow a rule you agreed to without being reminded.
